Ultrastable Photonic Microwave Oscillators: Purity Verified
Its ultrastable microwave systems (UMS) have established Menlo Systems as a pioneer in ultralow phase noise microwave technology within the X-band radio frequency range (8–12 GHz). Their performance surpasses the sensitivity limits of even the most advanced commercial phase-noise analyzers. In standard configurations, off-the-shelf instruments are unable to resolve signals of such purity – their internal local oscillators become the limiting factor.
This challenge led to a collaboration between Rohde & Schwarz and Menlo Systems, aiming to develop a practical measurement setup capable of capturing the phase noise of the world’s purest microwave signals. Their approach: pair a best-in-class Rohde & Schwarz phase-noise analyzer with two of Menlo Systems’ UMS as local oscillators, and benchmark the setup using a third UMS as the device under test (DUT). Their result: a turnkey measurement setup with groundbreaking sensitivity – setting new standards in RF phase noise analysis.
