We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2026 application round for the Theodor W. Hänsch Prize in Quantum Optics, an international award created by the Optica Foundation and sponsored by Menlo Systems, together with our partners Hamamatsu Photonics and Thorlabs, to support outstanding early-career researchers in quantum optics.

The prize is designed to recognize and encourage innovative research projects with the potential to advance optics-enabled quantum technologies. It provides both visibility and dedicated funding to researchers at a formative stage of their careers, enabling them to pursue ambitious ideas in areas ranging from fundamental quantum optics to applied and industrially relevant technologies.

Named after Prof. Theodor W. Hänsch, Nobel Laureate, co-founder of Menlo Systems, and Director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, the prize honors his groundbreaking contributions to precision metrology, laser spectroscopy, and optical frequency comb technology. These achievements continue to underpin many of today’s advances in quantum science and technology.

The recipient of the Theodor W. Hänsch Prize receives USD 20,000 in research funding, along with travel support to attend Quantum 2.0, offering both financial flexibility and direct engagement with the international quantum optics community. The prize emphasizes scientific freedom, allowing awardees to focus on research directions with the greatest potential for long-term impact.

The 2026 application period opens on 21 January 2026 and closes on 20 March 2026. Early-career professionals and members of Optica active in the field of quantum optics are encouraged to apply. A broad range of research areas is eligible, reflecting the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of modern quantum optics.

We are proud to support this initiative and to contribute to fostering the next generation of leaders in quantum science and technology.

Further information on eligibility and the application process is available via the Optica Foundation’s application portal.
